Troy G. Woollen

Clients value his familiarity with new technologies and his experience tailoring strategies to clients’ specific for-profit or nonprofit goals.

Biography

Troy has more than a decade of experience advising and representing clients on trademarks, copyrights, domain names, and related intellectual property matters and disputes. His clients range from new startups to multinational companies and nonprofit organizations. He assists clients in managing and protecting their trademark and copyright portfolios, including coordinating their domestic and international prosecution, licensing and enforcement activities. He also represents clients in disputes involving trademarks, copyrights, domain names and other intellectual property. Troy has represented a wide variety of well-known brands and nonprofit organizations, including clients in the media, publishing, education, technology, finance, manufacturing, software, apparel, consumer goods, food and agriculture industries.

Troy was a University Honors Scholar at Auburn University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English (summa cum laude). He also studied abroad in Sucre, Bolivia and San Remo, Italy. Troy earned his J.D. from New York University School of Law.

Troy grew up on a Nebraska farm and enjoys traveling, hiking, gardening and reading.

Experience

Successfully defended a small, privately-held company in multiple actions for alleged trademark infringement brought by a multi-billion dollar, publicly traded company.

Represented a major franchise of cafes in a trademark dispute regarding alleged infringement of the well-known “I ♥ NY” trademark.

Managed the worldwide intellectual property portfolio of a large, international nonprofit organization, which includes trademark registrations in the U.S. and dozens of other countries, as well as numerous copyrights. This organization has an international reach that includes more than 160 countries and 100 languages.

Advised a national media organization on trademark matters relating to its name change and complete rebranding. The organization had operated under its original name for over 35 years prior to its rebranding, and nearly a half-million people engaged with its media every week.

Served as intellectual property counsel to the anonymous sponsor of the nationally prominent GodSpeaks® billboard campaign, through which sayings appeared on some 10,000 distinctive black and white billboards in 200 cities across America.

Represented a nonprofit university in a trademark infringement and internet domain name dispute with a for-profit education company.

Managed the international trademark portfolio of a multinational restaurant franchise that has hundreds of stores on multiple continents.

Represented a privately-held company in a trademark infringement dispute against a competitor company that adopted a trade name and trademarks confusingly similar to our client’s long-held trademarks.

Represented large nonprofit literary rights holder in negotiation of multinational publishing agreements.

Negotiated the transfer or purchase of internet domain names for numerous clients.

Professional and Civic Activities

Troy is a member of the American Bar Association and the Georgia Bar Association. He has helped teach summer courses on entrepreneurship for gifted high school students. He gives presentations on trademark and copyright law to a wide range of audiences, from a global gathering of nonprofit leaders in Cape Town, South Africa to high school students in rural Nebraska and business leaders in Atlanta, Georgia.
